Why Ashley became a therapist

I knew from an early age that I wanted to help others as a career. There was one moment that confirmed this belief. In high school I was part of a leadership class where we explored various careers and post secondary learning opportunities. One of these places was called Gemini House, which was part of the local Family Tree systems of support. Gemini House served teens who had run away from home. What made Gemini House different in my mind was that instead of ticketing or criminally charging (which is standard protocol) the teen and sending them back home; they looked beyond the “problem” and looked at what the teen and family needed to make sure they didn’t feel the need to run away again.

It was their action stepping back and looking at the whole person- the teen and the systems that supported them needed that made me decide to become a social worker. In our lives we all need that person or group of people to step back and see us as whole, not just what may be going wrong for us in one moment in time, and walk with us through the muck so we can live in our light, our fullest selves.

What is Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a unique therapeutic approach that incorporates animals into the therapeutic process to achieve specific treatment goals. From dogs and cats to horses and even dolphins, animals have a remarkable ability to facilitate emotional, physical, and cognitive healing in humans.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Spending time with animals has been shown to reduce levels of stress hormones and promote relaxation. Our therapy animals provide a calming presence, offering unconditional love and support to clients as they navigate their therapeutic journey.

Interacting with animals can lift spirits, boost mood, and promote feelings of joy and happiness. Our therapy animals are experts at providing comfort and companionship, helping clients feel less isolated and more connected to the world around them.

For individuals struggling with social anxiety or communication difficulties, interacting with animals can provide a safe and non-judgmental way to practice social skills. Our therapy animals offer gentle encouragement and acceptance, helping clients build confidence and develop meaningful connections with others.

Animal-assisted therapy can have a positive impact on physical health as well. From lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health to increasing mobility and reducing pain, the therapeutic benefits of interacting with animals are far-reaching and profound.

For individuals who have experienced trauma or adverse experiences, animal-assisted therapy can be a powerful tool for healing. Our therapy animals offer a sense of safety and security, providing comfort and companionship as clients process their trauma and work towards recovery.

Therapy for Children & Teens in Colorado

We understand the unique needs of young minds and provide tailored treatments that promote growth and emotional well-being. Our experienced child therapists are dedicated to creating a compassionate and engaging therapeutic environment for your child, utilizing a variety of techniques, including play and art therapy, to help them develop essential cognitive behavioral tools for a happier and healthier life.

Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development, and each child’s journey is distinct. Our therapists recognize this diversity and ensure that the treatment is specifically tailored to meet the individual behavior and developmental level of each child. For younger children, we integrate play, art, or other fun activities as a platform for learning and emotional expression. This approach allows children to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and non-threatening manner, fostering greater self-awareness and emotional regulation.

Preteens, tweens & teens, often facing unique challenges in their transitional phase, find comfort and support in our therapy sessions. Our therapists establish a strong rapport with these young individuals, helping them develop a sense of hopefulness as they acquire skills to manage their emotions and thoughts more effectively. With a focus on empowerment and growth, we aim to instill confidence in children, encouraging them to face life’s challenges with resilience and self-assurance.

For younger children, at the heart of our child therapy approach lies play therapy – a powerful method that honors a child’s unique developmental level and encourages self-expression through play. Play therapy enables children to communicate and process their emotions, thoughts, and struggles in a language that feels natural to them. It serves as a valuable tool in helping children better understand themselves, their experiences, and the world around them.

The benefits of play therapy are vast and versatile. Children struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can benefit from the structured and interactive nature of play therapy, which helps improve attention span and impulse control. For those grappling with anxiety and depression, play therapy provides a safe space to explore and release pent-up emotions, building coping mechanisms to manage their emotional distress. Moreover, children who have experienced trauma find play therapy to be particularly effective in processing their experiences and facilitating healing.

Behavioral issues are common among children as they navigate their emotions and social interactions. Play therapy offers a platform for understanding and addressing these challenges by allowing children to explore and experiment with various behaviors in a supportive and therapeutic setting.

Divorce can be a significant life event for a child, causing confusion, sadness, and anxiety. Play therapy can help children cope with these complex emotions, providing an outlet for expression and helping them navigate through the changes in their family dynamics. Additionally, play therapy can assist children in developing and maintaining healthy friendships, building essential social skills that foster positive connections with peers.

Our commitment to creating a positive and compassionate therapeutic relationship is at the core of our practice. We understand the importance of trust and empathy in the therapeutic process, and we strive to build a safe space where your child feels understood, valued, and supported. Parental involvement is also highly encouraged, as we recognize the crucial role parents and caregivers play in a child’s development. In certain instances, therapists may invite parents and caregivers to participate in play therapy sessions. This interactive approach reinforces the idea that healing and growth are collaborative efforts involving both the child and their support system.

We believe that child therapy should be a positive experience. Our child therapists are not only professionally trained but also deeply passionate about helping children thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. We celebrate the uniqueness of each child and work tirelessly to identify their strengths and address their challenges in a manner that suits their individuality. According to the CDC, Treating a child’s mental health problems as soon as possible can help children reduce problems at home, in school, and in forming friendships. It can also help with healthy development into adulthood.

If you’re seeking professional and compassionate child therapy services that prioritize your child’s well-being and growth, look no further. Our team is dedicated to supporting your child on their journey towards a brighter and more fulfilling future. Together, we can help your child develop the necessary tools to overcome obstacles, build resilience, and lead a happier, healthier life. Let us be part of your child’s transformative journey towards a brighter tomorrow.

Teen therapy near me for anxiety, depression, relationships, communication

The teen years are hard even in the best of situations. Teenagers face a combination of societal pressure, peer pressure, and academic pressure. Then, you add all of the changes they’re facing right now and everything going on in the world around them. At times, the stress can be debilitating.

In this new world of social media, technology, and social norms, it’s easy to feel lost in understanding the world teenagers are trying to navigate. Many times, teens have a whirlwind of emotions but just do not seem to know how to appropriately express them.

Your child is old enough to have their own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions. And yet, they still need you. They need you to provide guidance and support. They may want independence, but they’re not quite ready for it yet. Your teen is trying to create their own identity and figure out their place in the world. So, It’s no wonder so many teens experience stress, anxiety, and depression.

Benefits of Teen Therapy

Safe and Confidential Space:

Teen therapy offers a sanctuary where adolescents can talk openly about their feelings and experiences without fear of judgment or repercussions. This safe space encourages honest communication, allowing teens to explore their thoughts and emotions in depth.

Alternative Perspectives:

Therapists provide a fresh, unbiased perspective on the issues teens face. Unlike family members or friends who may be emotionally involved, therapists can offer objective insights and alternative viewpoints, helping teens see their situations from different angles.

Coping Mechanisms:

One of the primary goals of teen therapy is to equip young individuals with effective coping strategies. Teens learn practical techniques to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges, empowering them to navigate life’s ups and downs more effectively.

Emotional Regulation:

Adolescence is often marked by intense emotions and mood swings. Therapy helps teens understand and regulate their emotions, fostering emotional intelligence and promoting healthier reactions to various situations.

Improved Communication Skills:

Through therapy, teens learn to articulate their thoughts and feelings more clearly and constructively. Enhanced communication skills not only benefit their personal relationships but also contribute to better academic and social outcomes.

Building Self-Esteem and Confidence:

Therapy helps teens identify their strengths and build on them, boosting their self-esteem and confidence. This positive self-perception is crucial for their overall well-being and future success.

Addressing Underlying Issues:

Some teens struggle with underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. Therapy provides a platform to address these concerns, helping teens understand the root causes of their distress and develop healthier ways to cope.

Preparation for Adulthood:

Teen therapy equips young individuals with essential life skills that prepare them for adulthood. From problem-solving and decision-making to stress management and self-awareness, these skills are invaluable as they transition into the adult world.

How Teen Therapy Works

At the heart of teen therapy is a collaborative relationship between the therapist and the adolescent. The process typically begins with an initial assessment to understand the teen’s needs, concerns, and goals. Based on this assessment, the therapist develops a tailored treatment plan that may include individual counseling, family therapy, or group sessions.

Individual Counseling:

  • In one-on-one sessions, the therapist works closely with the teen to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These sessions are designed to build trust, encourage self-reflection, and develop personalized coping strategies.

Family Therapy:

  • Family dynamics often play a significant role in a teen’s emotional well-being. Family therapy involves parents or guardians in the therapeutic process, fostering better communication and understanding within the family unit. This holistic approach ensures that the teen’s support system is aligned with their therapeutic goals.

Group Sessions:

  • Group therapy provides a unique opportunity for teens to connect with peers facing similar challenges. These sessions promote a sense of community and belonging, helping teens realize that they are not alone in their struggles.
