Meet Makala
Counseling Intern

Makala Roggenkamp, Masters Level Counseling Intern

Hello! I’m Makala (she/her). My therapy journey began in high school when I experienced the benefits of therapy as a client. Initially pursuing nursing in college, I discovered my passion for a more holistic approach to healing.

I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor’s in Psychology. After working as a Registered Behavior Technician, supporting with children on the autism spectrum, I realized that a Master’s in Social Work would align perfectly with my aspirations. I am currently pursuing my degree at Walden University with a clinical focus.

Why Makala is becoming a therapist

I enjoy working with a wide range of individuals, meeting each person with curiosity, warmth, and a commitment to honoring their unique experiences. I have a special passion for supporting neurodivergent individuals, recognizing the strengths and challenges that come with thinking and experiencing the world differently. My background as a Registered Behavior Technician gave me valuable experience working with children on the autism spectrum, and I continue to provide affirming care to neurodivergent clients of all ages.

I also have a deep appreciation for working with older adults. During my internship with Pathways Hospice, I had the privilege of supporting individuals and families navigating grief, loss, and major life transitions. That experience reinforced my belief in the importance of having a compassionate space to process emotions, whether tied to aging, illness, or bereavement.

I have experience working with children and teens, particularly those with neurodivergence, and I’m passionate about continuing to provide affirming support to individuals who experience the world differently. At the same time, I feel a deep calling to work with older adults and those navigating grief and life transitions. During my internship at Pathways Hospice, I facilitated bereavement and grief groups, often incorporating sand tray therapy as a way to help people process emotions beyond words. I am especially passionate about preemptive grief work—helping individuals and families prepare emotionally for the losses they see coming.

While I have particular interests, I welcome anyone seeking therapy. My approach is person-centered and adaptable, ensuring that each client feels heard, understood, and supported on their journey. Whether you are exploring your identity, managing life’s challenges, or seeking healing after loss, I am here to walk alongside you.

By participating in this program, clients can receive the support they need at a reduced cost, while interns gain essential hands-on experience in their field.

Affordable Therapy Options

Our “Counseling on a Budget” program offers a sliding scale payment structure, allowing clients to choose a rate that fits their budget. Clients can opt to pay $80, $70, or $60 per session, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to receiving high-quality mental health care. Additionally, each intern has the opportunity to offer three pro bono therapy spots. These no-cost sessions are designed to help those in need who might otherwise be unable to afford therapy.

Intern Expertise and Supervision

The therapeutic services provided through this program are delivered by our dedicated master’s level interns. These interns are in the final stages of their academic training and bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to helping clients achieve their mental health goals. To ensure the highest standard of care, all intern sessions are closely supervised by experienced licensed therapists. This supervision guarantees that clients receive effective, evidence-based treatment and that interns receive valuable feedback and guidance.

Comprehensive Non-Clinical Support

In addition to providing therapy, our interns engage in various non-clinical activities that contribute to their professional development and the overall success of the program. During their non-clinical hours, interns:

– Stay updated with the latest research and therapeutic techniques by reading relevant materials.

– Develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each client’s needs and goals.

– Maintain accurate and detailed progress notes to ensure continuity of care.

– Participate in regular consultations with peers and supervisors to discuss cases and receive feedback.

– Attend individual and group supervision sessions to receive guidance.

It involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a non-judgmental environment, with the goal of improving mental health and overall well-being.

Our approach to mental health counseling is holistic, considering the mind, body, and spirit. We believe that true healing comes from understanding the interconnectedness of these aspects and addressing the root causes of mental health concerns.

How Mental Health Counseling Can Help You

Mental health counseling can be a transformative experience, offering a path to healing and growth. Whether you’re facing a specific mental health challenge or simply looking to improve your overall well-being, counseling can provide the tools and insights you need to navigate life’s complexities.

Here are some common issues that mental health counseling can address:

  • Anxiety and Stress: Learn techniques to manage anxiety and stress, reducing their impact on your daily life.
  • Depression: Work through feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and fatigue, and develop strategies to regain your energy and motivation.
  • Relationship Issues: Improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen your relationships with loved ones.
  • Trauma and Grief: Process past traumas or recent losses in a supportive environment, and find ways to move forward.
  • Self-Esteem and Confidence: Build self-esteem, overcome self-doubt, and embrace your strengths and abilities.

Our therapists are experienced in working with a wide range of mental health issues and are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals through compassionate, evidence-based counseling.

Our Approach to Mental Health Counseling

At Tribe Mind Body Wellness, we take a personalized approach to mental health counseling. We understand that each person is unique, and so are their challenges. Our therapists use a variety of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and more, to create a treatment plan that fits your specific needs.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a common approach in mental health counseling, helping clients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. This evidence-based therapy is effective for treating a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, and phobias.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy integrates mindfulness practices into the counseling process, helping clients stay present and manage their emotions in a healthier way. This approach is particularly beneficial for those dealing with stress, anxiety, and trauma.

Psychodynamic Therapy explores the unconscious factors that influence behavior and emotions, helping clients gain insight into their past and how it affects their present. This deeper exploration can lead to profound personal growth and healing.

Our therapists are trained in these and other therapeutic approaches, ensuring that your mental health counseling experience is tailored to your individual needs and preferences.

Our Approach

At Tribe, we take a holistic approach to growth, meaning we focus on the whole person:  mind, body, and soul.  If you are struggling with a relationship issue, professional challenge, or just feeling uneasy with the way things are, counseling can help.

You may be asking, “Would I benefit from therapy?”  If you want to grow in the following areas the answer is yes:

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to understand emotions and emotional needs both in self and others. Developing self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy are all a part of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Counseling can help you to increase your EI so you will be better able to connect with those around you.

Relationship / Marriage

Relationship/Marriage.  Many women struggle finding ways to connect with their husband or significant other.  “No matter how hard I try I just can’t reach him,” is a common sentiment for women.  Also, women can struggle with vulnerability and knowing how to create safety.  We can support you in understanding yours and your partners attachment style and how to create a loving and supportive form of communication.

Shame

Shame.  Shame is a universal human problem that impacts men and women alike. Learning how to deal with shame through the power of vulnerability, self-acceptance, and receiving love and acceptance from others is how shame is combatted.  Our individual therapy and our group therapy are both excellent ways to persevere over shame.

Fear

Fear.  Fear can stop you from living a free and fulfilling life.  Fear often manifests itself in the form of anxiety or worry.  Learning how to isolate negative and fearful thoughts, while also practicing disciplines such as contemplative prayer, meditation, mindfulness, and mind-body techniques with your therapist, will help you to move from fear to freedom.  The fear that results from a traumatic experience can also be processed through therapy.  We offer EMDR which has helped thousands or people overcome the pain of trauma.
