Men's Therapy
Men can get as much value out of therapy as women and yet, therapy sounds like a strange concept for so many. Most of the men I work with have never been in therapy before, or they tried it once years ago, but are ready to make a change. If you want to have space to talk about anything that is weighing on you, you’re in the right place.
According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 1/3 of men experience depression in their lifetime. There is no reason that you need to face your life stressors alone. Together, we can tackle feelings of anger, sadness, and stress.
You may be skeptical about therapy, which is fine.. we enjoy working with men who have never gone to therapy before or went once years ago and decided it wasn’t for them. It’s important to us that you find a judgment-free space where you can talk openly and find clarity.
There’s a myth that therapy is about crying or discussing your childhood. Hey, nothing wrong with that, but therapy is also about facing your problems and developing a concrete plan to improve your life.
Therapy is about getting stronger – mentally, emotionally and relationally.
Men tend to hold in their emotions and bottle them up. This leads to a lot of discomfort and can lead to misunderstandings in their relationships with others. Like a pot of boiling water, if the heat isn’t turned down, it boils over.
Many men grow up with the message that they should not express their feelings, rather they need to be strong for everyone else. This can make it difficult to cope with anger, anxiety, depression, and all of the stressors life throw at them.
From a young age, men are taught that to be strong they have to keep their emotions in check. This often leads to many men feeling isolated, anxious and depressed. The very emotions they should seek help for, they stuff down and decide that they have to do figure it out by themselves. Bearing their emotional pain seems a better idea than opening themselves up to the stigma of seeking therapy.
There is no denying that mental health issues show up differently in men than in women, resulting in many going completely ignored and untreated. For many men, their emotional pain shows up as irritation, anger, or just shutting down. The bottling up of stress can lead to inflammation in the body, which causes chronic health conditions, including heart disease.
In your work with us, you’ll learn coping skills and the tools you need to address your situation.
